The Gold Standard applies when a country backs its currency by gold.

The U.S. Dollar has been the World’s most dominant Reserve Currency
since 1945, and it was once backed by gold.

You could take the U.S. Dollars that you had in your possession into a
Federal Reserve Bank and exchange it for the equivalent amount in gold.

In 1971 U.S. President Richard Nixon told the U.S. Treasury to stop backing
the U.S. dollar by gold thereby taking the whole world off the gold Standard.

In 2013 the last country in the world stopped backing its currency by gold,
and now the whole world operates with Fiat Currencies.

A Fiat Currency is any currency that is not backed by anything.

Bringing Back the Gold Standard
