The first time I went in to business for myself many years ago I had to sign over my house as security to the bank in order to get a £40,000 overdraft; take out a ten year lease on premises; take on a partner who had street cred in retail so that I could get umpteen credit accounts with suppliers and put some stock on the otherwise bare shelves of this newly refurbished burger bar that I had visions of becoming a Hi-Fi shop. At that time, I had three shops a huge inventory supported by the bank and 21 staff.
