When you are undergoing your consultations for your plastic surgery, you must do your own research not only in the surgeon themselves but into the surgery that you wish to undergo. While research can only take you so far and not necessarily make you feel confident in the surgeon's abilities to do exactly what you want, that is why preparing some questions beforehand can make you feel a lot more comfortable and secure in your decision, but also provide you with a lot of information to help you prepare emotionally and physically.
How Many Times Have You Performed The Surgery?
It’s another way of understanding the surgeon's experience, while they might have over 20 years of experience being a plastic surgeon, but most surgeons have ‘preferred’ surgeries and specialise in areas of the body. Therefore, they might be better known as a breast surgeon, head and neck surgeon, body surgeon and so forth. Therefore, you want to ensure that this procedure has been performed by them countless times for years.
If you are not happy with their answer, that is completely fine, as there will be surgeons who do specialise solely in the procedure that you want. A consultation at the end of the day is meant to help you better connect with your surgeon, and sometimes it doens’t work out, but it’s fine, it teaches you what you want and need out of a professional medical relationship.
Are You A Member Of Any Professional Societies?
Esteemed plastic surgeons are members of medical professional societies, which is where they are recognised for their skilful work and positive impact on the field. For example, there is the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), amongst several others, some of which are very specific to body surgery, such as the Association of Breast Surgeons (ABS). You should ideally find all of this information online. Some surgeries, like UK Aesthetics, let their patients know details about their surgeons, such as their history, experience and so forth.
This is good to know the exact credentials your plastic surgeon has, and technically, the more the better.
What Technique Will You Use?
While this should be something that they discuss in the consultation but it’s possible that they might not want to overwhelm you during your initial consultation with terminology. However, making it clear that you have done your research and understanding that they already have an initial game plan is confidence-boosting in their ability to do a good job.
This will also help you better understand and prepare for the changes to your body.
What Do The Total Fees Cover?
It’s good to know exactly what you are paying for from surgery itself, anaesthesia and any in-between costs such as an overnight stay and so forth. This will better break down the surgery and avoid any miscommunication between you and the doctor. Any changes to the cost you need to ensure that you are made aware of immediately.
You also want to ensure that you understand what the average cost is, not only in your area but overall, as some surgeons, based on their experience and abilities, will charge more for their services and rightly so.
