Master’s Degree

Health science students develop a broad understanding of how to advance strategies that promote and protect health. They are trained to assess public health needs and implement community-based interventions for disease prevention, increased life expectancy, and health promotion. They also study the relationship between human and animal health as part of a One Health approach to public health.

Despite global attention on Greece’s 323 billion euro debt, 25% unemployment, and refugees washing up on its beaches, the country has managed to survive six years into its economic crisis. However, the effects of austerity have impacted everyday life. For example, it has lowered citizens’ disposable income and has caused significant changes to their diet. This, in turn, has affected their health and well-being.

Jacey Greece, DSc, MPH, is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) where she teaches courses on health behavior theory, intervention planning, and health communications. She is the evaluator for multiple grants focused on provider training and education including for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [Boston Sustainable Models for Unhealthy Alcohol Use Reduction program]. Her other evaluation work includes projects focused on healthy eating, access to food, childhood obesity, community-based approaches to child hunger, behavioral epidemiology, and monitoring and surveillance.

Doctorate

The Doctor of Public Health is a professional degree for healthcare leaders who want to advance the field. It teaches students to study patient populations and consider the societal impacts of healthcare policies and programs. Students who pursue this degree often work in academia or public policy, conducting research and writing peer-reviewed papers to help advance healthcare.

A recent study examined the public’s perceptions and grading of the importance of various health risks, including road accidents, cancer, STDs, depression, alcohol abuse, diet and obesity, vaccination, air pollution and environmental protection, smoking and physical exercise. Results showed that the risk perceived as most important by respondents was road accidents. The second most important was cancer, followed by STDs and depression. The third most important was air pollution and environmental protection, with the lowest ranked topic being smoking.
