The movie industry prioritizes the highest quality possible in terms of cast, creativity, technical aspect, and output. Most of the blockbusters you see at the box office do not come cheap; a huge sum of money is invested in their production. In view of this, a costly budget is prepared for most Hollywood movies. The quality of a movie cannot be more than the production budget, except on rare occasions. Therefore, when you see a high-quality movie in all aspects, its budget is not likely responsible.

There is a history of expensive movies in Hollywood. Although an accurate amount of money spent producing a movie may not be available, the budget is usually made public. Over the years, there have been several Hollywood movies produced at a high cost. Here are some of the most expensive movies made in Hollywood.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

Directed by Rob Marshall and released in 2011, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was produced at $397 million, which is still one of the most expensive movies in history. The movie's quality, the setting, cast, and everything about the movie show attention to detail.

2. Waterworld (1995)

Waterworld was directed by Kevin Reynolds and released in 1995. The production cost of the movie is estimated at $271 million. As of 1995, Waterworld was the most expensive Hollywood movie ever produced. Unfortunately, the movie is considered a flop as the production suffered from three huge hurricanes that made the entire set sink. Regardless, Waterworld is one of the most expensive Hollywood movies.

3. John Carter (2012)

Directed by Andrew Stanton, John Carter was produced in 2012. The movie came with a budget of $263 million. The movie's production encountered a series of problems and setbacks. John Carter is known as one of the biggest flops in Hollywood. The movie left Disney with a significant loss. Despite several attempts to complete shooting the movie, it was abandoned due to cost.

4. Tangled (2010)

Tangled was co-directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard and produced in 2010. The production cost for the movie was estimated at $260 million. The shooting of the movie lasted about ten years due to several aborted attempts. Although Tangled made a profit, the production cost was rather high.

5. Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Directed by Sam Raimi and produced in 2007, $258 million was spent on its production. The production of the movie went beyond the estimated completion time, making the cost to increase. Unfortunately, the movie was not well-received like Spider-Man 2.
