You can fly across the world, set up in a new place, and still end up feeling alone with your laptop.

Freedom is great.
But real connection — that’s what keeps you sane.

Here’s how I’ve started making actual friends while living abroad… without forcing conversations I don’t care about or pretending to be someone I’m not.


😫 THE STRUGGLE: It’s Easy to Stay in a Bubble

You get used to solo routines:
 Wake up, work, gym, beach, scroll, sleep.

And it’s comfortable — but it’s also isolating.

I found myself doing the same things every day, in a city full of people I didn’t know… and not making a move to change that.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want connection — I just didn’t know how to start.

💭 THE PUSHBACK: “Isn’t Everyone Just Passing Through?”

That’s what I told myself.

“It’s not worth trying to make real friends here. Everyone’s leaving anyway.”
 “I’ll just wait until I settle somewhere more permanent.”

But here’s the truth:
Connection doesn’t need to be permanent to be real.
 Even a short friendship can make a big difference.
