Do not be afraid to take risks!

My fellow marketers, can we be really sure of anything in life? And if not, why are we so afraid to take risks? The fact of the matter is that we gamble every day, in the sense that every decision we take in life always carries a certain level of uncertainty attached to it. I find it highly amusing when someone thinks otherwise, like they know what tomorrow holds.

You see, most people (especially the religious ones) seem to have an aversion to formal gambling, which they see as a serious sin. They somehow believe that those who formally gamble are lazy, irresponsible and plain stupid. However, what they fail to realize is that Life, by its very nature, defies all predictions. The expression "Life is a gamble" reveals a profound insight into the essence of existence.

Life, as we know it, happens in space and time, a condition that makes every living being subject to the limitations of these two principles. One cannot be in two different points of space at the same time, nor can one live in two periods of time simultaneously. Therefore, whatever knowledge that one might possess is bound to be limited. And because of those limitations, whatever decision one takes in life is loaded with risks. We gamble with our heart when we get involved in a romantic relationship with someone. It may or may not work out as we envision it. We gamble with our reputation when we buy anything on a credit card, for we may not able to repay the debt. And if we are bold enough to purchase a car or a house through the help of a financial institution, we are then risking both our money and our credit worthiness when we sign the agreement with a bank.

The point we are trying to establish here is that even though most people do not consider themselves as gamblers, the only basis for their decisions in life is sweet dear Hope, which is a polished word for gambling. Neither the formal gambler, nor the “virtuous” individual know for certain the outcome of their decisions. The “ virtuous” individual has no ideas whether or not he will still have a job in one, five or 20 years from now to be able to keep sending the payments on their $300,000 brand new home. Yet, they do not hesitate one second to produce the $30,000 or more required as a down payment and which constitutes their entire savings accumulated over years of hard work. These same people, if you were to ask them to buy a lottery ticket for $1, would proudly reply that they do not gamble, in a tone that suggests that they are too holy to engage in such a sin. How ridiculous human beings can be!

At this point, we would like to propose a definition of gambling. The American heritage dictionary defines gambling as "the act of betting on an uncertain outcome, as of a contest, or taking a risk in the hope of gaining an advantage or benefit". As we can see, the two basic features of gambling are: uncertainty and hope. Whether you are buying a lottery ticket or writing the check for the down payment on your dream house, you are essentially gambling. Because if you knew for certain that you would not win the jackpot, or that you would not be able to keep up with the payment on your mortgage, you would not have taken any of these actions. Life really is a gamble, and we are all gamblers, whether we like to call ourselves by the term or not. So my friends, go ahead start welcoming risks with open heart and open arms!
