Leased Ad Space
Your subscribers sign up for your email list because
they’re interested in what you can offer them.
But what if your emails never hit their inbox?
What if your messages always end up in the spam folder
or promotions tab instead?
It happens more than you might think. Luckily, there’s
a super simple solution: whitelisting.
Whitelisting is when a subscriber adds your email
address to their contacts list within their Internet
Service Provider (ISP) — like Gmail, Yahoo!, MSN,
Hotmail, etc.
I like to think of an ISP as an “email bouncer.” Just
like a brawny bouncer standing outside a nightclub,
an ISP guards the inbox doorway and decides who gets
in and who doesn’t.
When a subscriber whitelists you, however, they put
you on their inbox’s VIP list. The bouncer sees your
name and will almost always send your messages
straight to the primary folder. (Time to party.)
If a subscriber doesn’t whitelist you? There’s a
much higher chance the bouncer will send your message
to spam or the promotions tab. (Time to head home
to your cats.)
Place whitelisting instructions at the bottom of your
Welcome Email (which is the very first email you send
new subscribers, don’t have a Welcome Email? Use this one).
Here’s a quick example of what you can write. Feel free
to tweak it to match your brand’s voice and tone.
Take this important step! To make sure you receive emails
from me, add my email [enter your email address here] to
your contacts list. Don’t skip this step! By adding me, you
ensure my messages, special offers, and invites make it
into your primary inbox.
Or, just hit reply to this email and say “hello!” or ask me
a question. That will automatically add my email to your
contacts list.
See you in the inbox,
