Is Aeromexico Safety Record Commendable? Aeromexico has a generally good safety record. In its 75-year history, the airline has only had 2 fatal accidents, with a total of 291 fatalities. The most recent fatal accident occurred in 1986, when a Boeing 727 crashed in Mexico City, killing 167 people.
In 2021, the FAA downgraded Mexico's air safety rating to Category 2, which means that the country's civil aviation regulator, AFAC, does not meet all of the ICAO safety standards. This downgrade affected all Mexican airlines, including Aeromexico. However, Aeromexico has been working with AFAC to address the deficiencies that led to the downgrade, and the FAA has said that it expects Mexico to return to Category 1 status in the near future.
