The Average Person Swallows Four Spiders in Their Sleep a Year?

The origin of this myth is a mystery, spider experts say. And beware the myth within the myth. A report that the idea appeared in the 1954 book Insect Fact and Folklore is false.

There is no scientific study on how many spiders people swallow in a year; the number four is made up. Spider experts say it is highly unlikely that even one of our eight-legged friends would crawl into a person's mouth. And it is even more of a stretch that the spider would then be swallowed. So rest easy, and with your mouth open.
