I visited my Millionaire friend a lot.

And on one such visits during my early days as a marketer he taught me something so simple yet so POWERFUL that the first few minutes after he explained it I literally couldn’t breathe.

I just stared.           

It started this way.                              

‘’Sir, I am saving for this big project’’.

He looked at me.

‘’Really?

Nice’’. He said. ‘’So how long have you been saving for this thing?’’

‘’Six months, sir’’ I said proudly.

He smiled.

But I knew that smile, I knew I was walking into a trap.

But I kept talking.

‘’The problem is, things usually come up and then I spend the savings and start all over again’’

He stopped what he was doing, leaned back in his seat and studied me for a moment.

‘’Saving is a trap’’. He began. ‘’I am surprised you don’t know this by now. There are three steps to making money...Earn, Save, Multiply, you are stuck in stage two’’

He looked at me:

‘’The problem is a lot of people get lost in one of the first two steps.

They either earn, spend and don’t save.

Or they earn, save for too long and don’t multiply what they have saved till they buy one nice toy’’

‘’But I am not saving to buy a nice toy, I am saving for a new project’’.

He looked at me like I was mad.

‘’For 6 months?

You have money lying around in the bank for 6 months – doing nothing?

Can you hear yourself?’’

I kept quiet.

Waiting for the lesson.

‘’What do you think the bank does when you deposit your money’’. He asked me.

‘’They invest it’’. I said.

‘’Exactly’’.  My millionaire friend said, leaning forward.

‘’Don’t you get it? These guys have mastered how money work, they don’t take money from you and lock it up – they find a way to multiply it while they wait for when you will withdraw’’

‘’If you want to be rich’’. He added quickly. ‘’Study the banks. You should be multiplying that money, Not letting it sit idle at the bank waiting for it to get to your target figure, like a daft snail’’

‘’If you have tried multiplying it, maybe you wouldn’t have to wait for 6 months to start your project’’

I looked at him, uncomfortable.

‘’What if I lose it all’’. I asked, allowing my wussy side show.

My millionaire friend looked at me, and for a moment I thought he would slap me.

‘’Remember what I said about the bank?’’ he began, slowly.

Obviously a little irritated.

‘’Do you think they take everything they have and try to multiply it at once?

That will be stupid, they usually have a reserve. There is a formula to it’’

‘’The pie increase formula.

You take it in incremental pies.

If you have a million dollars for instance....’’

‘’I claim it in Jesus name’’ I cut in, referring to the 1 million dollars. We laughed.

You take 100K from it – and do that thing you do. The goal is to do 50k on the 100k. Now you have 150k, throw it back in SLOWLY....get out another 50k on it. Now you have 200, do another 50k on it. Now you have 250k – Save 100K, repeat the process with 150k’’

‘’After every 4 steps, save – repeat it again’’

I took it all in. It made perfect sense.

‘’But what if I lose it?’’ I asked.

‘’That is why you are not rich’’. He said. I winced like he had kicked me in the guts.

‘’Have you asked, what if you don’t make 50k and do 100k instead?’’ He asked.

And in just one afternoon, I realized the one thing that made all the difference, the rich goal of the rich is to move to the multiply stage as fast and as often as possible.

Earn, save, multiply.

BOOOM BOOM BOOM.

While the poor do either just the first and second step, and get stuck then lose everything they have saved to paying for something that don’t multiply it.

The rich don’t have their money lying around waiting for the rainy day, they make it start raining from day one.

Damn, that was the secret.
